Only one Austin school district school was ranked academically unacceptable in the 2010 Texas Education Agency academic rankings released Friday.
Eastside Memorial High School's Green Technology vocational school was ranked unacceptable; the vocational school is one half of the new school created in 2009 after Johnston High School was closed due to poor performance. The other vocational school on the campus -- Eastside Global Tech -- was ranked academically acceptable.
Other Austin Independent School District campuses that had been ranked unacceptable in the past, such as Reagan High School, were ranked academically acceptable this year. In addition, 32 AISD schools were ranked 'exemplary'.
“These results are evidence of the hard work of AISD students, families, and staff,” Superintendent Meria Carstarphen said in a press release. “Everyone should be proud of these results, but keep in mind that these assessments are only one piece of the achievement picture. I have the utmost confidence that our schools can and will meet these challenges, ensuring that our students graduate on time and ready for college or career.”
This year the TEA is grading schools based on a measure that allows students credit for improvement even if they fail the standardized test.
Advocates of Texas Projection Measure say it rewards schools with a large percentage of disadvantaged students who are making consistent improvements, even if they fall short of minimum standards. Critics say the projection measure masks struggling students.
In a letter to school administrators earlier this month, Texas Education Commissioner Robert Scott said he may suspend the practice next year.
