Austin Police Department officer Leonardo Quintana was fired Thursday after being arrested for driving while intoxicated earlier this year.

On Jan. 12, Quintana reportedly hit a roundabout in Leander with his SUV. When Leander police arrived, they said he was glassy-eyed and having trouble standing. He was arrested for driving while intoxicated. 

In 2009, Quintana was suspended in 2009 for not turning on his cruiser's dashboard camera while he shot Nathaniel Sanders outside an East Austin apartment complex. While the Austin Police Department and police monitors believe Quintana shot Sanders in self defense, he was reprimanded for not recording the incident. He received a 14-day suspension.

The family of Sanders sued Quintana, and Quintana had just testified in court about the shooting the day he was charged with DWI. 

Quintana was "indefinitely suspended" Thursday.

His firing was opposed by the Austin Police Association. President Wayne Vincent said, "he was a good officer. He didn't deserve this."

Austin police chief Art Acevedo released this statement.

"Today, a disciplinary review hearing was concluded involving Senior Police Officer Leonardo Quintana. SPO Quintana has been indefinitely suspended from the Austin Police Department as a result of his DWI arrest.... The decisions reached by the chain of command during the review of this incident were unanimous. APD employees subscribe and are held to the highest levels of ethical conduct."
