  • Man's debit card used when he was in coma, police say

    Thursday, Nov 19, 2009 @06:15pm CST

A woman stole the debit card of a man in a coma for two months, according to Austin police.  Now the hospital says the thief was the victim’s ex-wife.

Armando Kelly was a patient at Seton Medical Center from May to August.  During that time, someone used the debit card nine times in Austin and San Antonio, withdrawing almost $1,300.

The theft wasn’t discovered until after the victim’s recovery and discharge from the hospital.

"According to the victim, it was a new ATM card,” Det. Matt Conoly with the Austin police Financial Crimes Unit says.  “He thinks he may have had the pin number written down somewhere within his wallet perhaps he thinks that's how it could have occurred, which is just a reminder to people not to do that because this is what happens."

An ATM surveillance camera caught a picture of the suspect.  She is described as Hispanic, in her late 20s and early 30s.  Police say she had a young girl and drove a maroon 2002-2005 Chevrolet Silverado LS crew cab or extended cab truck. The truck had a tan interior and a black toolbox in the back.

Seton spokesperson Matilda Sanchez told KEYE TV a detective told her the suspect is Kelly’s ex-wife.

Austin police ask anyone with information to call (512) 974-5290.
