  • Todd and Don radio show back on

A radio show we were told was canceled indefinitely after a co-host repeatedly used a racial slur is back. A statement released on Tuesday from KLBJ’s management and Hispanic leaders said to expect the Todd and Don talk show on the airwaves by December 7th.

Although Hispanic leaders told KEYE TV they were surprised by this decision, they feel like these guys deserve a second chance. But they added, Emmis Radio management decided to put the show back on the air before contacting any leaders of the Hispanic community. It's a decision those leaders said was backwards and unfortunate.

When radio personality Don Pryor repeatedly used an ethnic slur on his talk show in July, Austin Hispanics said they were outraged.

“I couldn't believe it,” Celia Israel with the Greater Austin Hispanic Chamber of Commerce told KEYE in July. “I was stunned.”

“That word is just unacceptable,” former Austin Mayor Gus Garcia said.

After management canceled the show indefinitely, Austin Hispanic leaders received a dose of outrage themselves.

“The last time, there were death threats,” said Paul Saldana, the President of Adelante Solutions. “We had to shut the office down.”

Now, four months later, Emmis Austin Radio called those Hispanic organizations and told them Don Pryor and Todd Jeffries reached out to the Hispanic community, paid their dues and that the show will air again.

“It was sort of backwards,” Saldana said. “They should have contacted us, and said hey, we're contemplating putting them back on air. Instead, it was like, oh, a courtesy call. By the way, we're putting them back on the air. It was an afterthought.”

Still, Saldana and others met with the radio group on Tuesday. Emmis Austin Radio management initially wanted to put the Todd and Don show on the air this Monday. Saldana told us they convinced the radio group to hold off until both hosts go through diversity training first. The new air date is now December 7th.

“I know the fellas, good guys,” said State Senator Gonzalo Barrientos who believes it's time for everyone to move forward. “Let's communicate, let's be sensitive to all people and let's go on with the American dream.”

Saldana told KEYE TV he'll be listening to the new show that Emmis Radio said will be a, “transformed perspective on community history, expectations and cultural sensitivity.”

“If they feel these guys deserve a second chance, we're going to watch them and monitor them and definitely hold them accountable in the future,” Saldana said.

Management from Emmis Radio could not be reached for comment. We did learn everyone there had to sign a new, zero tolerance policy regarding this issue. Management assured Hispanic leaders there will be no more second chances.
