Friday, Nov 6, 2009 @05:11pm CST As Central Texas Muslims gathered for prayer at a local mosque Friday, we talked with them about the Muslim soldier behind the Fort Hood shootings.
Most are not too concerned about possible backlash. But they still want everyone to know Maj. Hasan's actions go directly against the teachings of Islam. Among those who attended prayer services at the North Austin Muslim Community Center, a Muslim member of the military who has served three tours of duty. 2nd Lt. Rafael Antigua recently visited Fort Hood where he briefed soldiers on the Muslim faith and culture as they prepared to deploy. “A Muslim, one who is practicing, or anybody who has strong religious foundation don't commit these atrocities,” he said. Islam Mossaad is the spiritual leader or Imam at this center. He says Hasan's actions reflect the opposite of what the Koran teaches. “One of the teachings of Islam is you have to process the anger. You don't act in anger,” he said. “And actually a companion of Mohamed said ‘Give me some advice.’ And the prophet said ‘Don't be angry.’” Both Mossaad and Antigua are confident the majority of Americans will put the Fort Hood shootings in perspective -- and not blame other Muslims for the action of one disturbed person. “I’m not too concerned,” Antigua said. “I think the American Muslim communities have established themselves quite well in allowing American public know what we are about it. We have hundreds upon hundreds of individuals Muslims who have served honorably in the Armed Forces. One act by an individual is not going to change that.” Antigua is a language and cultural specialist in the National Guard at Camp Mabry in Austin. |
