Reported by: Katherine Stolp Monday, Sep 28, 2009 @08:32pm CDT We're learning more, disturbing details about a sex offender who police said kidnapped a little girl in Southwest Austin. Butcher is a sex offender with a long record of targeting little girls. People who live in his South Austin apartment complex told us Butcher often acted suspiciously, but they never wanted to think the worst of their neighbor. Now, many there wish they brought their concerns to police. Neighbor Don Rogers said he first met Butcher through a common interest of motorcycles. But Rogers told us he immediately noticed something was off. “He (Butcher) knew every girl's name in this immediate area,” Rogers said while pointing around the apartment complex. “He didn't know any men, but knew every girl and every dog's name of those girls. It was strange.”
“I told my friends when I moved in the first month that if anything happens, check the guy upstairs because he gives me a weird vibe,” Denny told KEYE TV’s Katherine Stolp. What none of these neighbors knew, was that Butcher was a sex offender on the run. Police said his first conviction, back in 1991, was for aggravated sexual assault of a nine-year-old girl in Korea, when he was in the military. Then in 2005, two Ohio mothers spoke out, fearful Butcher would be released from jail after attempting to kidnap their daughters, one seven, the other nine-years-old. "I'm irate," said one of the mothers, Tammy Hunter in a 2005 interview. "I hope he doesn't get out," said the other mother, Tasha McFee. "The girls were out there playing, and for some reason, my Dad went to go answer the phone and he (Butcher) pulled up and talked to the girls,” Hunter explained about the 2005 incident. "They (the two girls) just held hands and ran for the door," McFee added. Butcher was later released on parole. Police said he was then supposed to move to North Carolina but never showed. Ohio detectives immediately contacted Butcher's family who believed he headed to Texas, but they weren't sure where. The last time authorities had contact with Butcher was January of 2008, until now. “The-nine-year old victim was extremely courageous,” said Lt. Mark Spangler, with the Austin Police Department on Monday.
“When it happens right in your back pocket, it's something you're not going to forget for a very long time, a very long time,” Rogers said. Butcher is charged with aggravated kidnapping and failure to register as a sex offender, after he moved here to Texas. His bail is set at $600,000. |
